Congressman Matt Gaetz Visits Border, Calls for IG Investigation into DHS Releasing Illegal Aliens

July 15, 2021
Press Release

Washington, D.C. — This morning, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) toured the San Ysirdo Port of Entry with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) officials in San Diego, California, to examine first-hand the border security efforts of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In light of this visit, Congressman Gaetz, along with Congressmen Andy Biggs (AZ-05) and Louie Gohmert (TX-01) and the support of The Remembrance Project, issued the following letter today to Inspector General Joseph Cuffari, urging an investigation into the Biden Administration’s Department of Homeland Security’s refusal to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies in deporting criminal illegal aliens.

The Remembrance Project, a nonprofit group that represents a voice to victims killed by illegal aliens, agrees the Department should do its duty to support the Rule of Law, our Constitution, and defend our nation’s sovereignty. The organization honors and remembers the victims on its impactful Stolen Lives Quilt banners – illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.

Full text of the letter sent to Inspector General Cuffari can be found HERE or below.

LETTER TEXT

The Honorable Joseph V. Cuffari

Inspector General

Department of Homeland Security

245 Murray Lane SW

Washington, DC 20528

It is now apparent that under President Biden’s Administration, the Department of Homeland Security has ceased cooperating with local law enforcement agencies in deporting criminal illegal aliens.

Reports show that contrary to the policy of the Trump Administration, criminal illegal aliens are being released from local jails and permitted to remain in the interior, as opposed to being handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for immediate deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security is tasked with defending our nation from foreign and domestic threats. As an agency of our executive branch, the Department must take care that the laws of our nation are faithfully executed. This blatant refusal to enforce our nation’s existing immigration laws at the expense of the safety of American citizens shocks the conscience.

Many Americans have been killed by dangerous illegal aliens who should never have been in this country, much less permitted to remain. Border protection and the right to exclude are necessary to the security and sovereignty of a free state. All illegal aliens must be deported in accordance with our laws, including DACA illegal aliens.

I hereby request that your office conduct an immediate investigation and produce a report on your Department’s refusal to cooperate with local law enforcement agencies. We must find out on whose authority the Department is acting when it disregards its duty to see that our U.S. Constitution is adhered to and federal law is faithfully executed.

Sincerely,

Matt Gaetz

Member of Congress
