Congressman Matt Gaetz Issues Statement on SCOTUS Masterpiece Cakeshop Ruling
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) issued the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a victory for all Americans who support the right to practice religion free from the heavy hand of government. The 7–2 ruling found that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated Jack Phillips’ right to practice religion. Indeed they had: the Commission previously allowed three separate bakers to refuse to bake cakes with anti-LGBT messages, because those cakes violated the bakers’ consciences. Yet Mr. Phillips was afforded no such protection; instead, he was told that his faith was “despicable.” The overt bias expressed against Mr. Phillips’ religious beliefs was morally repugnant, and set a terrible precedent: business owners of faith must not be forced by the state to violate their own beliefs. That is un-American and wrong.
The Constitution clearly states that Congress shall not prohibit the free exercise of religion. This was written into the Constitution specifically to shield citizens from government overreach and abuse. Today’s ruling by the Supreme Court shows that America still values the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution, and that religious liberty is as American as apple pie. The large majority opinion of this case shows that, even in these contentious times, the Constitution is still regarded as the supreme law of the land. This is a good ruling, and a good day for America,” Rep. Gaetz said.
