Congressman Matt Gaetz Demands AG Sessions Appoint a Special Counsel to Investigate Uranium One & Obama-Clinton Era Scandals
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) today released the following statement in response to Attorney General Jeff Session’s contradictory answers during Tuesday’s House Judiciary Committee’s Hearing on Oversight of the Department of Justice (DOJ). During the hearing, Rep. Gaetz questioned the Attorney General on two occasions whether he had the authority to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the worrisome Uranium One deal, as well as the Obama-Clinton era scandals. The Attorney General’s answers to Rep. Gaetz’s questions contradicted each other.
“We continue to have a lack of clarity from the Attorney General, and Tuesday’s hearing is just another example of the ongoing elusion. At one point, the Attorney General said he had the power to appoint a Special Counsel, only to recount later that he wasn’t sure. I have been calling for three and a half months for an investigation on Uranium One and the Obama-Clinton era scandals, and have now reached the point that I am done with the DOJ’s smoke and mirrors. The time has come for Jeff Sessions to name a Special Counsel and get answers for the American people, or step down from his position as the Attorney General,” Rep. Gaetz said.
Rep. Gaetz: "Do you have the authority today, subject to your recusal to appoint a Special Counsel
to investigate the Uranium One matter?"
AG Sessions: "I believe I do."
Rep. Gaetz: “I just want to be clear, as it relates to the Uranium One matter, you do believe you have the authority to appoint a Special Counsel and you do not believe that that authority you have isn’t subject to any recusal at this time?”
AG Sessions: “I cannot say that.”
On July 27th, Rep. Gaetz, along with 19 other Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee, sent a letter to AG Sessions, requesting a Special Counsel who would seek answers to these troubling questions. On September 28, after receiving no response from the DOJ, five House Republican members, including Rep. Gaetz, met with the Attorney General and DOJ staff, but many of their questions remained unanswered.
On Monday, Reps. Gaetz and Jim Jordan (R-OH) penned an op-ed for Fox News, asking AG Sessions to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the Clinton Foundation, the worrisome actions of former FBI Director James Comey, and the infamous Fusion GPS dossier. Their op-ed also asked why the DOJ had provided no response to House Judiciary Committee’s letters.
